Path of Exile Currency Guide for Beginners

Path of Exile Currency Guide

Earlier we introduced League, Class, Passive Skill Tree and Gems in Path of Exile, now it's time to introduce Currency.

Unlike any Role-Playing game (RPGs), the Path of Exile doesn't have an actual "currency system" – For example, it doesn't have any gold, money, in-game cash or any sort. Path of Exile Currency is a group of special items (mostly orbs and scrolls), which serve for crafting and enhancement items.

Common and Important Currency Items

Walking through the game you will see a great number of different currency items, but as for a beginner, most common and important currency items you find are:

    • Scroll of Wisdom – identifies items;
    • Portal Scroll – opens a portal to town;
    • Orb of Transmutation – upgrades a normal item to a magic item;
    • Alteration orb – changes all the modifiers of a magic item randomly;
    • Orb of Augmentation – adds a random modifier to a magic item (if it has only 1);
    • Alchemy orb – upgrades a normal item to a rare item;
    • Orb of Chance – upgrades a normal item to a random rarity – magic, rare, or even unique;
    • Chromatic Orb – changes the color of sockets randomly;
    • Jeweler's Orb – changes the number of sockets randomly;
    • Orb of Fusing – changes the links between the current sockets randomly.
    • Chaos Orbs & Exalted Orbs – usually if you get lucky to obtain them it is wiser to collect them and use for trade, rather than for crafting items.

All items of any quality that you don't need you can sell to any vendor in town. In exchange, you will get currency items.

Besides, there is also a specific Vendor recipe system. When you sell some particular items or a combination of them you get particular currency and items for them. The following are some examples:

    8x Blacksmith Whetstone = 1x Glassblower's Bauble
    1x Orb of Transmutation = 5x Scrolls of Wisdom
    4x Orbs of Augmentation = 1x Orb of Alteration

Why is Currency Important in the Path of Exile?

1. The most fun builds out there requires currency to purchase their core items to make the build works. Best-in-Slot, high defense items that have high HP & resistance and high DPS items can be expensive. Basically, the currency is everything, you can buy any items with it, craft a really powerful weapon or armor with it, 6-linking an item, you name it.

2. Chaos Orbs recipe requires a full item set of a character which includes: Helmets, Body Armors, Gloves, Boots, Belts, Amulets and two Rings. Chaos Orbs are usually more valuable and needed in most Leagues.

How or When to Use Orbs?

As a beginner, you'll probably have no idea how or when to use orbs. The following guide will help you.

• In the Beginning

Start out by amassing your hoard. Don't use your orbs for anything just yet. Focus on finding your build and how you want to play first. Worry about your equipment and gems later, when you've finalized your build. You can spend your orbs then.

• Crafting

Crafting

Near the endgame, players start crafting their own equipment. If you want to get in on it, you'll need the following:

    Orbs of Transmutation
    Orbs of Chance
    Orbs of Alchemy
    Chaos Orbs
    Orbs of Alteration
    Regal Orbs
    Exalted Orbs
    Eternal Orbs
    Orbs of Scouring
    Divine Orbs
    Blessed Orbs

A stock of Chromatic Orbs would also be good if you want to change the colors of the item's gem sockets.

Start stockpiling early, so you don't have to spend all of your reserves when you start crafting.

How to Farming Currency?

Farming Currency

There are a few methods to get orbs and other PoE currency.

• Vendor Recipes

Vendor Recipes are "secret" combinations of items that you can trade to any NPC with the "Sell Items" that will often reward you with useful items or currency.

• Divination Cards and Prophecies

Prophecies are a random roll when you trade 1 Silver Coin to Navali, these are reliant on RNG, so the rarer and more useful Prophecies are quite valuable.

Divination Cards are a lot easier to manage, just pick any that drop up.

• Rare Gear Drops

There are a ton of rare drops in the Path of Exile that aren't gear items. These Currency items always have a use, but may not be always worth picking up.

• Maps

Farming maps and running them as efficiently as possible is hands down the easiest way to make currency in POE. As a new player, you should focus on learning map and boss mechanics, as well as increasing your Atlas completion percentage. Here's a basic strategy for doing that:

    White Maps – Tiers 1 -5 – Upgrade to Magic using Transmutations and Augmentations, avoiding any map modifiers that might kill you, like Reflect.
    Yellow Maps – Tiers 6-10 – Upgrade to Rare using Alchemy and Chaos, avoiding any map modifiers that might kill you, like Reflect. For added Quantity and Pack Size, Vaal them, hoping for 8 modifiers.
    Red Maps – Tiers 11 -16 – Upgrade to Rare using Alchemy and Chaos, avoiding any map modifiers that might kill you, like Reflect. For added Quantity and Pack Size, Vaal them, hoping for 8 modifiers.
    Map Master encounters are also great sources of extra mechanics for loot. Alva and the Incursion mechanics are a strong contender next to Nico and Delving for best currency farming.

• Delving

Get enough azurite to cap darkness resist and light radius for the low-level areas. When delving, try to find Fractured Walls in the darkness. That's where you'll find fossils, which can sell for up to 200 Chaos Orbs. However, that kind of price is only for the very special ones, and you're more likely to find many that would sell for far less.

• Crafting

Another method is to craft items for selling. Ask or look around for the more popular mods on equipment and make those. Otherwise, you can sell the service of crafting custom items or other services. You can look around certain public channels to find out which services are profitable or doable for you.

• Strongboxes

These are always worth popping, although if you're using special strategies to maximize value, you can gain quite a bit of valuable loot from them. We've included the names of the best Strongboxes down below.

Cartographer
Diviner
Unique
Arcanist
Gemcutter
Jeweler

Of course, if you don't want to spend a lot of time grinding the PoE currency in the game, you can skip crafting altogether and just go buy your stuff. Eznpc.com is the best place to buy PoE currency for safe deals, cheap prices, and fast delivery.
