Path of Exile Beginners Guide - Choosing a Class

After joining the league that best meets your needs, now, all you have to do is choose a profession. For the Path of Exile beginners, how to choose a class? This guide gives a detailed introduction to the class and helps you choose a class that suits you.

Path of Exile Class

Class Introduction

Path of Exile has seven playable characters, although only six are initially unlockable. The seventh, the Scion, can be permanently unlocked by rescuing her from a cage in the Upper Scepter of God area of Act 3.

• Duelist: He fights with melee attacks and can also summon an AI minion to fight alongside him.
• Templar: Fires projectiles, including three balls of lightning at once and a chain lightning attack.
• Witch: A female spellcaster with high intelligence.
• Ranger: She uses a bow and is extremely dexterous, but can wield swords as well. Despite being a glass cannon, the ranger is my class of choice.
• Marauder: A melee fighter with tremendous strength.
• Shadow: A dexterous and intelligent fighter, he uses short-range weapons and traps during battle.
• Scion: She can develop into any character build thanks to Path of Exile's skill system. This makes her an advanced character, and she must be unlocked later in the game.

Attributes

Every Class is connected to its core Attribute. There are 3 core attributes: Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence. Every 10 points in each of these ability scores offer various bonuses to the player's character.

Attributes
Ability Effect Per 10 Points
Strength Every 10 Points increase maximum Life by 5 points and increases Melee Physical Damage by 2%.
Dexterity Every 10 Points increase Accuracy by 20 and Evasion by 2%.
Intelligence Every 10 Points increase maximum Mana by 5 and Energy Shield by 2%.

7 Characters' Core Attributes Bonus

By choosing a Class you choose which Attribute bonus you start with. The following is a list of all Classes and what Attributes they begin the game with:

7 Characters' Core Attributes Bonus
Class Strength Dexterity Intelligence
Marauder 32 14 14
Ranger 14 32 14
Witch 14 14 32
Duelist 23 23 14
Templar 23 14 23
Shadow 14 23 23
Scion 20 20 20

Note that the Scion Class is unlocked upon reaching Act 3 and rescuing her with any character. She is the most flexible class but also is not meant for new players due to building complexity.

It is pretty obvious to see which class is more prone to melee or ranged combat. Which one is good with magic or which depends on his weapon.

Class Upgrade

Later in the game, there will be an opportunity to complete The Lord's Labyrinth and get a kind of upgrade to your class (Ascendancy). With the help of Ascendancy, your exile will strengthen his ability to survive in this world and finally form your character's class.

Therefore before choosing a class and start playing, we recommend learning which one of them is the best for your game style:

• Marauder

Juggernaut – tanky melee class with lots of armor and damage mitigation.
Berserker – offense melee class with lots of damage.
Chieftain – melee builds with fire attack skills and totems.

• Ranger

Deadeye – bow oriented class (also very good for any projectile-based skills).
Raider – swift and deadly gameplay with short combat buffs, equally suitable for ranged and melee style.
Pathfinder – class that heavily relied on his flasks (potions), so you can play with a spell or any melee builds.

• Witch

Necromancer – best class for minion-based builds.
Elementalist – become master of fire, ice and lightning spells.
Occultist – good for chaos and cold DoT (damage over time) spells.

• Duelist

Slayer – melee-oriented builds with a nice sustain (life leech).
Gladiator – great balance between offense and defense, a good choice for dual-wielding and 1-hand + shield based melee builds.
Champion – supportive tank, that can taunt enemies and protect allies.

• Templar

Inquisitor – class, that combines elemental spells and melee playstyle.
Hierophant – spellcaster with totems and brands, both deal with damage by themselves, you only need to summon them.
Guardian – tanky support with auras and summons.

• Shadow

Assassin – deadly melee classes with critical strikes and poison.
Saboteur – destroy your foes with traps and mines.
Trickster – specializes in dealing damage over time (DoT) with attacks and spells.

• Scion

Ascendant – the most flexible among all classes, you can choose two mitigated benefits from all ascendancies (but only one from each base class, for example, you can't take Slayer and Gladiator class passives, because they both belongs to Duelist).

Class Differences & Which One To Choose

Which class to play in Path of Exile

While different starting Attributes can lead to shaping your character's build, it is ultimately the least important choice. Path of Exile provides an unusually high number of character slots, so you can play and switch between all seven classes if you so choose. Also, the time-limited nature of leagues and the likelihood that you might unwittingly create a flawed character build the first time you play all mean that you'll probably be creating new characters before too long anyway. At last, what defines your character the most is skill points invested into the Passive Skill Tree, Gems slotted into gear and your Ascendancy Subclass choice.
