Path of Exile Beginners Guide: Join the League that Best Meets Your Needs
With the arrival of Delirium, a large number of new players flooded the Path of Exile. So, what should beginners do first? One of the first choices a new player will be faced with is choosing which league to play with.
Each league is its own game world, almost like a game server. And there are 3 League types: Standard, Challenge and Private. These are basically game variations; they change the way you play the game. Therefore, you should read the following article carefully to understand the differences between several leagues and join the league that best suits your needs.
Standard League
The default league most players find themselves in is the Standard League, as the name would suggest. The basic game without any modifications.
Despite the name, the standard is not the most populated league. But it's probably the best one for new players.
There are two variants to the standard league, which are Hardcore and Solo Self-Found.
1). Hardcore
The Hardcore variant adds a somewhat unique twist on permadeath to your play. Whenever a player within the hardcore variant standard league dies, their character reverts to whatever form the character was in during the normal standard league.
This challenges players to complete the game without dying. It is much harder to do, and if you die you get bumped down to Standard.
Note that hardcore leagues are less populated than non-hardcore leagues, and thus make it harder to group up and trade with other players. There are currently no Xbox Achievements for completing the game on hardcore, so only play hardcore if you really want the challenge.
2). Solo Self-Found
Solo Self-Found is another variant, and in this variant players cannot trade or party with other players, thus converting the game into a single-player experience.
These league turns the game into a single-player affair, thus bumping up the difficulty by removing co-op. Most veteran players go for Challenge, but see what you make of them and follow your heart.
Private League
Private leagues are custom made Leagues that allow additional modifiers. They are purchased with real money, and the initial cost is 120 Points or roughly 12$ USD. The default duration is 10 days and it has 10 player slots available, but these both can be increased with further purchases. The owning player will consequently be able to add interesting modifiers to the Path of Exile world to enhance their playing experience.
The private league can use similar modifiers to other leagues, such as the unique permadeath feature of the hardcore league variant. Or, the owning player can add unique modifiers such as increased monster statistics or disabled vendors.
Private Leagues can be based around the Standard League or the current Challenge League.
Challenge League
Challenge Leagues are special "temporary" Leagues that only last for a certain amount of time, and they usually have specific modifiers or features. Challenge leagues are always available in pairs, so players will have two unique challenge leagues available at any given time. After some time, the leagues will be removed and then replaced with new and unique leagues. When a challenge league ends, a player's stash and characters are all shipped over to the relevant permanent league that the player was previously using.
These offer special prizes for completing league-specific challenges, with numerous challenges available to go after. These are generally available for three months, after which point any characters created for the challenge league will be moved to the standard league.
In Path of Exile, players usually play in the Challenge League until it expires, and then create a new character when the next Challenge League is released.
Even though standard sounds like the default mode, it isn't. Path of Exile players generally concentrates on the current challenge league. Thus, you'll want to consider how important difficulty, multiplayer features, and the economy (item trading, etc.) are to you when selecting a league.
