Everything We Know So Far About Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile 2 is not actually a separate new game, but rather an expansion that also completely overhauls the base game in the process. Not only is the team implementing a new campaign but is also tweaking the whole customization mechanic, the way classes work and its animations, offer better gameplay and graphics. So, here's all we know about Path of Exile 2.

The Campaign

According to the original announcement, the Path of Exile 2 will include a full new campaign that will accompany the existing one.

The Story

Path of Exile 2 will add a new seven-act story that takes place 20 years after the end of the current game. It will overhaul many of the game's core systems and rework the mechanics of each of the game's seven character classes. It's also getting a major visual rework with physics-based rendering.

New Environments

A sequel would get boring quickly if players fought in the same areas. From footage released so far, the areas of Act 1 are reminiscent of Diablo and, surprisingly, Dark Souls. The dimly lit caverns and inspired swamps help vary the rather generic cities and shores from the first game.

The Enemies

Path of Exile 2 will release with a cast of new enemies to tackle, ranging from swarms of one-shot-one-kill minions to hardcore bosses. This will give players another layer of challenge along with more chilling figures that we'll, sure enough, have nightmares about.

New Weapon Types

While not many new weapons have been shown so far, spears have been confirmed to be in the Path of Exile 2. This weapon archetype has been requested by the community for years now, showing the developers are willing to listen to fan requests and feedback.

The Classes

It is not a separate game. You may pick your campaign of choice as you create a new character. Your cosmetic items and microtransaction purchases will carry over to the new campaign.

While PoE2 uses the same archetypes, there will be 19 new Ascendancy Classes different from the original. That would make transferring your old characters quite difficult. Also, with the 20-year time difference between the two, you should let your old character rest. This also means that there are all-new bosses and creatures to defeat. It's a breath of fresh air from the rather repetitive boss battles of before.

Shapeshifting

In POE 2 though, shapeshifting will occur instantly in the push of a button and the player will be able to switch in and out of it whenever he/she pleases. There will be a select skillset for each "shape", which will correspond to a series of in-game moves.

Graphics

The game's physics engine and graphics will be updated. Projectiles such as arrows will either get stuck on surfaces, break, or shatter, depending on their material. Graphics will be rendered more realistically, as will the action.

Gems – Items

The Skill Gem system will get a rework. Equipment slots used to determine how many gems you can link together. With the new overhaul, it's the skill gems that have the slots. That's right, you can have a six-slotted skill gem to make skill swapping easier. Also, the passive skill tree has something in the works, though GGG is keeping mum about it for now.

Combat Improvements

Many combat improvements have been made over the years through countless updates, but Path of Exile 2 will be making even more changes to make combat more impactful.

Arrows will stick to surfaces when struck, enemies recoil when hit, and visual effects have been massively improved. Animations have also received some love, allowing for more fluid movement between the usage of skills. It also looks significantly less janky and more polished.

New Ascendancies

New classes will receive new prestige classes called Ascendancies. Each class, excluding Scion who only gets 1, receives 3 classes to pick from. Normally this happens by completing The Labyrinth, a hard single-life challenge gauntlet, but that appears to be getting removed in the sequel, hopefully meaning obtaining these Ascendancies will be easier. The best part is old Ascendancies are compatible with the new ones, meaning there will be 38 class options when Path of Exile 2 launches, significantly more than most RPGs on the market.

Better Bosses

The bosses in the Path of Exile have more similarities to bullet-hell bosses than typical dungeon crawler fights. Because of this, PoE's boss fights are some of the best and hardest in the business.

Most of these amazing fights are in the game's later Acts and endgame map system, which most players will not even see. A sequel gives the developers a chance to add high-quality boss fights into every Act, meaning all players will get to fight some of the insane bosses this game has to offer.

Shared Client & Endgame

Both Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2 will share the same client and endgame. This means that players can choose to complete either game's campaigns, and then interact with the same endgame system.

It means that not only players from both games can play together, it also means that the years of work that went into making Path of Exile's mapping system so fantastic won't go to waste. The hundreds of dungeon layouts, dozens of modifiers, deep modification systems, thousands of items to collect, and optional side content will be carried over to Path of Exile 2. Both games will benefit from new skills and items, meaning PoE 2 will launch as feature-rich as its multi-year brother.

Release Date

There is no release date yet. The good news is that there might be a beta in late 2020. Don't worry about the original. The devs will continue to run its three-month cycle of updates. Once PoE2 is out, both will have the same expansion schedule.
