FIFA 20 Volta: New Features, Modes & Tips

The popular game FIFA 20 has been released, and many of its modes are identical to the previous series, but one of the biggest specials is Volta Football. Volta Football is a new addition to the FIFA 20 Series: it's a FIFA-street style mode with small pitches, small teams and no shortage of step-overs. Anyway, now let's take a closer look at all the details of the volta mode, check here.

FIFA 20 Volta New features

Volta Football doesn't have one set format: rather, you'll be playing 3v3, 4v4 or 5v5 games on pitches of varying sizes. You also can play with or without goalkeepers.

The full list of formats is:

﹡3v3 Rush (no set goalkeeper, small goals)
﹡4v4 Rush (no set goalkeeper, small goals)
﹡4v4 Street (set goalkeeper, larger goals)
﹡5v5 Street (set goalkeeper, larger goals)
﹡5v5 Futsal (larger goals, different rule set)

Depending on the ruleset of the tournament you're playing, games are either timed matches with three-minute halves, or they're won by the team who scores a specific number of goals first: usually five. If you draw a Rush game, play will restart and the next goal wins. In Street and Futsal, drawn matches trigger extra time, which is one minute each way. If it's still a draw, you go to penalties.

You can't slide tackle in Volta Football, but you can still foul.

Futsal has its own, slightly different set of rules. Penalties are awarded for accumulated fouls: once you've committed five fouls, the enemy gets a spot-kick for every foul thereafter. The count resets at the end of a half.

How to play Volta Football

In the "rush" style three-versus-three games and four-versus-four games, there is not a traditional goalkeeper, with the defender in the rear instead acting as another passer and shooter when they are not blocking access to the net.

An additional mode called "Futsal" also features rules and formations more like traditional soccer, but we will be focusing on the street modes that stand Volta out from the rest of FIFA 20.

Volta Football eliminates some of the mechanics and rules that are associated with traditional video game soccer matches. There is no offside penalty and stamina mechanic.

Pitch size varies depending on the location you choose, with some being about the size of a basketball court while others are significantly smaller.

The goal itself is also much smaller than in traditional FIFA matches.

VOLTA Diversity

EA is keen to add variety to VOLTA, which means you can use both male and female players in your squad for mixed teams.

You can also choose to play games with or without walls, forcing players to adapt their style accordingly.

VOLTA Modes

Here are the game modes you can play under the VOLTA mode in FIFA 20:

• Kick-Off mode

Take your favorite professional teams back to the streets and compete in a number of VOLTA locations and match formats. Play PSG vs. Lyon in Paris, the Madrid derby in the streets of Spain, or Chelsea vs. Spurs in a London cage.

• World mode

Build up your VOLTA team by playing through Single Player Matches against community-generated squads in a variety of formats and locations.

In World Mode, you play online against other players, and you have the chance of getting one of your prized players stolen – but don't worry the player is only a duplicate.

Select your turf and take the home advantage as you set your own rules within your arena and try to play to your strengths.

• Story mode

Take your unique player through a narrative-driven experience, where you face off against various legends of street football from around the world. Earn rewards, customize your player, and recruit for your squad, culminating in the VOLTA World Championship tournament in Buenos Aires.

• League mode

Play your way through promotion and relegation with the online VOLTA League. As long as you can win enough matches to get over the promotion threshold, you'll keep rising through the ranks. You get relegated if you win too few matches.

• Tour mode

Volta Tour pits you against other player-made teams in knockout tournaments. It basically takes teams that players are using, and gives them to the CPU. Selecting Volta Tour will bring up one of a number of available tournaments, each with different entry requirements (such as overall player rating) and rule sets. You can also browse the world map and select from a long list of tournaments if you don't fancy the ones in Tour.

Volta Football Tips and Tricks

﹡ Make sure you control off-ball defenders to cut out passing lanes-otherwise, you're giving your opponent easy goals.

﹡ Learn a few skills that move by heart. The new quick skill system looks good, but the skills are less useful than those from the base game.

﹡ Don't worry too much about being flashy: your players will naturally add flair to their game. The fundamentals are much more important.

﹡ Clothing items, hairstyles, and tattoos can be unlocked by completing challenges or spending coins in the Volta Shop, so microtransactions aren't required to get that must-have jacket you're after.

﹡ Anticipate crossfield balls. You can score by selecting your striker and intercepting passes across the backline. Exploit the numbers advantage.

﹡ On larger pitches, lofted through balls are very useful, especially if your opponent is pushing for a goal.

﹡ Don't rush. Lingering on the ball and waiting for them to move is often your best option.

﹡ Linked to that, learn to stop-and-go when you're running down the wing.

﹡ Never bring your keeper out. In Volta, they'll slide uselessly when they leave the box.

﹡ Don't change your mind until late in the game. Going 'Attacking' will leave you exposed at the back and even if you're three goals behind, you can score goals quickly in Volta.

﹡ Experiment with your lineups. Switch between formations to find the best combo.

﹡ The limited-time challenges are achievable, while the coins are earned by playing matches and are generously doled out in the story mode, so there shouldn't be too much grinding required even for the rarer, more valuable items.
